Defensive Strategy
The Art of Making Them Miss
Defense in boxing isn’t passive — it’s the setup for offense. Every slip, roll, and block should be followed by a counter-punch.
Key Defensive Skills
- The Jab-Parry: Use your rear hand to deflect incoming jabs to the side. Immediately counter with your own jab or cross.
- The Slip: Move your head just enough to let the punch pass. Inside slip (toward the punch) sets up hooks. Outside slip (away from it) sets up the cross.
- The Roll: Bend at the waist and let hooks pass over your head. Come up on the other side and counter.
- The Catch: Block body shots with your elbows and immediately fire back.
Counter-Punching
Counter-punching is the highest skill in boxing — hitting your opponent while they’re open from throwing.
- Time the jab: Slip outside their jab and throw a straight right over the top
- Counter the cross: Catch or parry the cross and throw a left hook
- Counter the hook: Duck under the hook and come up with an uppercut or hook of your own
Ring Generalship
Control the center of the ring. The fighter in the center has more room to move; the fighter on the ropes has none. Use footwork and the jab to maintain center-ring position.
"Hit and don't get hit." That's the entire philosophy of boxing defense. Make them miss, make them pay.
