Priority Order: What to Buy First

If you're building up gradually, buy in this order:

  1. Hand wraps — safety first, always. Never hit a bag without them.
  2. Bag gloves — protect the hands. The Sanabul Essential Gel is the best starting point.
  3. A heavy bag — freestanding if you rent, hanging if you own.
  4. Jump rope — the cheapest conditioning tool in boxing.
  5. Mouthguard — required before any contact work.
  6. Punch mitts — so you can work combos with your kid.
  7. Sparring gloves + headgear — only when the gym says they're ready to spar.
  8. Speed bag + double-end bag — advanced tools once fundamentals are solid.
A note on sizing: Youth fighters (under 120 lbs) typically use 12 oz gloves for bag work and 14–16 oz for sparring. Heavier teens and adults use 14 oz for bags and 16 oz for sparring. When in doubt, go heavier — more padding protects both hands and sparring partners.
