Amateur / USA Boxing Rules

Modern amateur boxing (governed by USA Boxing domestically) uses a 10-point must scoring system. Bouts are typically 3 rounds of 3 minutes for senior men, 3 rounds of 2 minutes for women and youth. Headgear is required for youth competitors but was removed for elite adult competition in 2013. Standing 8 counts allow the referee to assess a fighter who has been hurt but is still standing. Judges score based on clean, effective punching.
