Parent’s Guide to Boxing
Scoring
- Judges score each round on a 10-point system
- Winner of the round gets 10, loser gets 9 (or 8 for knockdowns)
- Clean punches that land are what count — not effort
Common Fouls
| Foul | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Holding | Grabbing the opponent to prevent punching |
| Low blow | Punch below the belt line |
| Rabbit punch | Punch to the back of the head |
| Headbutt | Intentional use of the head |
| Pushing | Shoving instead of punching |
Round Structure
- Youth: 3 rounds of 1-2 minutes
- Amateur: 3 rounds of 3 minutes
- Professional: 4-12 rounds of 3 minutes
- 1 minute rest between every round
What to Watch For
- Clean punches that land (not blocked or deflected)
- Ring generalship — who controls the center of the ring
- Defense — who’s making the other fighter miss
- Effective aggression — not just throwing, but landing
Be calm. Boxing is intense to watch as a parent. Your kid needs calm support, not a screaming corner. Trust their training.
