Golden Gloves: How to Get Involved
The Golden Gloves is the most prestigious amateur boxing tournament in the United States, running since 1923. It has launched the careers of Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and countless others.
How it works
- Register with USA Boxing and get a passbook. Your kid needs to be a registered amateur boxer.
- Train at a USA Boxing-affiliated gym with a certified coach.
- Compete in local sanctioned bouts to build experience and a record.
- Enter the local/regional Golden Gloves tournament. These are organized by region and typically run January–March.
- Win at the regional level to advance to the National Golden Gloves Tournament, usually held in May.
- National champions earn significant recognition and are often recruited for the national team pipeline.
Age requirements
- Youth Golden Gloves: varies by region, typically 10-15 years old
- Open division: 17-40 years old (varies by region)
- Novice division: for fighters with fewer than 10 bouts (provides a competitive entry point)
What it takes
- A minimum of 6-12 months of serious training before competing
- A coach who has tournament experience
- Physical readiness: your kid needs to be in excellent cardiovascular shape
- Mental readiness: tournament boxing is intense — multiple fights in a short period
The Golden Gloves is the front door to competitive amateur boxing in America. If your kid wants to compete, this is the first serious milestone.
