Speed Bag Drills
The speed bag builds hand speed, timing, rhythm, and shoulder endurance. If you can get one, it’s one of the best investments in boxing training.
Getting Started
- Start with a medium-sized speed bag (about 10x7 inches) — easier to hit consistently
- Mount it so the belly of the bag is at your eye level
- Stand directly in front, hands up near chin level
The Basic Rhythm
- Hit the bag with the front of your fist (not the knuckles — the padded area)
- The bag bounces off the back board: front-back-front (three bounces)
- Hit it again on the third bounce
- Start with one hand, slow. Get the rhythm before adding speed.
5-Minute Speed Bag Workout
- 1 minute: Right hand only — find the rhythm
- 1 minute: Left hand only
- 1 minute: Alternating — right, right, left, left
- 1 minute: Fast alternating — right, left, right, left
- 1 minute: Freestyle — mix it up, vary speed and patterns
Why Speed Bag Matters
- Timing: You learn to hit a moving target at the exact right moment
- Shoulder endurance: Keeping your hands up for rounds builds the stamina to keep your guard up in a fight
- Rhythm: Boxing is about timing more than power. The speed bag teaches this.
It takes practice. The first few sessions will be frustrating — the bag will fly everywhere. That's normal. Within a week of daily practice, your kid will find the rhythm.
